Positive Sign at the Writer’s Digest Conference
Two girlfriends and I took the mini-adventure of a lifetime and traveled to the Writer’s Digest Conference in Los Angeles to pitch literary agents on our book ideas. We stepped outside our regular worlds and our comfort zones, and offered something creative of ourselves. We each received positive responses from agents. It felt fantastic!
I’m writing The Possibility Book, which began as a book of wisdom for my boys, and then I got the crazy idea that the universe might be conspiring to help me. Sometimes the quotations seem to be appearing, the songs playing, the coincidences happening, precisely when I need them. An unusual premise. Some might say an “impossible” premise.
Well, if the sign above isn’t an indication that the universe might be playing ball with me, I don’t know what is. It’s the quotation from the breakfast menu door hanger at the Loews Hollywood Hotel, where the writers’ conference was held.
This same quotation, from Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, appears on a Quotable Cards magnet on my fridge. This same quotation was woven months ago into the earliest pages of The Possibility Book. Last weekend, it appeared again at the writers’ conference, where I was pitching The Possibility Book. Sometimes I find the quotes. Sometimes they find me.
That alone seems like a pretty good coincidence story to me. But it’s not the whole story. The whole story has to do with the pivotal moment when my friends and I first saw the breakfast menu. It appeared during a moment of distress. It changed fear to euphoria, doubt into belief. I’m feeling a little self-conscious about sharing the whole story. I hope to share it in the book.
By the way, if you’re looking for a source of inspiration today, Quotable Cards might be a good place to start.
Hi Michele,
Not sure if you’ll remember me, but we met in line at the conference- the girl from Kansas 😉 I hope you are doing well and it was so great to meet you. I really had a great time at the conference as well. I’d definitely recommend it for first time writers. Let me know how your progress goes with the book.
Hi Mandy,
Of course I remember you and the beautiful drawings of your characters. It was nice to meet you too! Thanks for your comment. Keep me posted via e-mail about how your book is coming along?
